Murph Guitars was a family-owned and staffed business
run by Pat Murphy in the mid-1960s in San Fernando, California. In their short
history, they built an extremely varied line of solidbody, hollow and
semi-hollow body guitars, and were attempting to branch out even further when
bad luck in the form of litigation fell upon the company and Murphy Music
Industries went bankrupt in the spring of 1967. A sad end to a cool company, and
the birth of the Rarest Silvertone Electric Guitar. Ever. This guitar was one of
25 that Murph built 'on spec' for Sears, with the promise of more orders to
come. Sears had exhausted their purchasing budget for fiscal '66, so the 25 that
Murph made were the only Murph Silvertones ever made. They never made it into any
catalog, and I wonder if they ever made it into any Sears store.

The Murph-built 12-string electric could have been one of the
greatest-selling Silvertones ever. Alas, it was not to be.
